Mudfest
The common theme across folks description of South By Five’s visit to Pollok Park was “mudfest”!

Traditionally a muddy route, the recent unsettled and unseasonably wet weather turned the race into our muddiest ever! Even course marking was fun!
An out section led to the start of the ‘screaming pits’, with squeals, squelches and wails caught on video and photo by the ever intrepid Blythe!
The course then began a two loop circuit with some nice undulating muddy bits, interspersed with some flat muddy bits, and some muddy sections through the trees!
On completion of the second loop, just when you think it can’t get any muddier…. that’s your 5k mark!

Then 400 metres or so to run and slide along the final section of the Rhododendron Walk, through the last puddle of mud and over the finish line to a well earned mulled wine and mince pie….well mulled wine anyway! 144 mince pies were found still unpacked in the car when we came to pack down the event 🙈🙈

The final hurdle
Bag drop became the final hurdle, highlighted by Alan Niven! With most runners expecting mud and wet weather, the wee tent was overwhelmed with kit, making extracting your gear a testing challenge!

There wasn’t many folk who can claim the title of “Cleanest Finisher”, but there was certainly one who put plenty effort into the title…. we’ll let you see if you can guess who it is!

Pollok Park podiums
Given the underfoot conditions, and it being a wee bit longer than 5k, it’s unsurprising that finish times were a bit longer than your ‘normal’ 5k.
However those front end folk seem to treat the mud and trails with a level of disdain and treat the timing clock as an irrelevance! The winning times were still incredibly quick!
